FISHERIES

Karaikal region has 10 fishing hamlets and about 2500 fishermen families with 24 Kms. of coastal area. Smaller number are engaged in pisciculture inperennial tanks and ponds.

DEVELOPMENTS: The Council for Applied Economic Research reported that Karaikal is situated in the richest coastal periphery of Tanjavur District for sea fisheries. Techno-economic feasibility survey report has been submitted to Government to establish a MINI FISHING HARBOR. State Government also set up a Ice-Plant-cum-Cold Storage Unit and Fish Seed Farms. Also inland fisheries encouraged.

OTHER INFRASTRUCTURE: Fish Farmers Development Agency, Fishermen, Cooperative Societies are cater the needs of fishermen.

ADMINISTRATION: A Joint Director of Fisheries headed the Fisheries Department of Karaikal.
