Karaikal: Encouraged by the overall response by the general
public to Karaikal Carnival 2006, the Agriculture Department, in
association with allied departments and District Administration is all set
to organize three day Agricultural festival - christened as Karaikal
Farm Fest 2006, with a view to benefit the farming community of
Karaikal, from 3rd to 5th of March 2006.
The mega festival to be held at Karaikal beach garden will consist of
Flower show, Vegetable and Fruit show, Herbal and Medicinal plants
display, exhibition of farm machineries, seeds, fertilizers, Sea food
festivals, Ornamental fish display, Cultural shows and Inter
College cultural competition, inter school cultural competition, Rangoli
Competition etc.
The Karaikal marketing Committee will organize a direct Buyer- Seller
meet for local Agri Products on cheaper rates and the Fisheries
Department will sell fresh fish catches during the festival. Karaikal
Marketing Society, Pondicherry Agro Service and Industries Corporation,
Pondicherry Power Corporation Ltd, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru College of
Agriculture and Research Institute, Fish Farmers Development Agency will
put up their stalls. Stalls will also sell seeds, Agro products,
Agricultural Industrial equipments, products manufactured by Women’s Self
Help Group, and farmers can look forward to see innovative farming
technologies and also bargain for best deals.
The Fisheries Department is planning to dig up display tank at the beach,
where commercial sweet water fishes are demonstrated for the benefit of
general public. In the morning session, the public can look forward to buy
fresh sea water and fresh water fishes and the evening one can savor
exclusive fish recipes at the venue.
Another thrust area would be the display of commercial important ornamental fishes. One can also buy good quality aquariums, aquarium fishes, fish feed, aquarium equipments.
Many of the scheduled banks, Co-operative Banks, Rural Banks and the Agriculture Development Bank etc will organize distribution of agricultural loans and also to publicise their farmer friendly schemes during the “Farm Fest 2006” like Kisan credit cards, Opening of zero balance savings account etc
On the cultural front, school level competitions will be held on 3rd evening in the beach venue and inter college competition on 4th , the local talents display on 5th. In addition to it, Rangoli competition will be conducted at Anna College. On the inaugural day, the function will start at 4 P.M. upto 10 P.M. and on subsequent days the festival will be from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M.
It may be recalled that Karaikal was once the grainary of the region supplementing even the food requirements of Pondicherry. Situated at the Tail – end of the rich Cauvery river delta, Karaikal can regain its lost glory in the agricultural fronts. The Karaikal Farm Fest 2006 is the right beginning in this direction.
